Communiversity: Life Skills Academy™
This is a program designed to provide a full curriculum of instruction and educational activities to participants from WCP as well as the greater community with the tools needed to acquire and maintain skills in the four basic areas of their Individual Performance Plan: i.e., Financial Independence, Health and Wellness, Strengthening the Family, and Next-Step Housing. Communiversity: Life Skills Academy™ is comprised of numerous courses and workshops with the following objectives for its participants:
Volunteerism is the backbone of Communiversity. Virtually all of the teachers in our program provide their services on an unpaid volunteer basis. Other volunteers provide an enormous amount of help assisting in various classroom activities, working with the participants with crafts and other activities.
Areas of Study:
There is the choice of daytime workshops ( Monday – Thursday 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.) or evenings ( Monday through Thursday 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. ) unless otherwise noted. If you are interested visit the schedule.
Financing Your Independence: Everyone must make appropriate financial decisions to maintain a secure financial future. The goal of this course is to connect all individuals to this valuable information and help them become smart money managers.
Career Planning: Resumes, cover letters and interviewing tips, Balancing work and family, stress management, professional image Tools for success, Career coaching, and mentoring are all tools that will be discussed in this workshop.
CDA—Child Development Credential: 120 hours of training beginning second quarter from 6:30 pm-8:30pm. Classes will be held every Monday and Thursday and operate through the fall. Participants must be at least 18 years of age, have a minimum of 480 hours of experience working with children, and must currently work or volunteer in a daycare program.
GED: Do you need your high school diploma? Would evening classes suit your schedule? Come and join us.
Mentoring: The Mentoring Program is designed to support and enrich the lives of Wilson Commencement Park's clients. Partnerships are established to assist with personal, educational, employment, financial planning and next step housing goals through coaching, role-modeling, sharing knowledge, providing emotional support and encouraging spiritual well-being.
Attain Lab: An opportunity for self-paced, Basic computer instruction, Career development Life/job skills training, and Academic enrichment.
Whole Healthy You Body, Mind and Spirit:
Family planning: Information and resources covering sexual and reproductive health topics; A five-part learning experience and personal journey into understanding, managing and resolving conflict; Conflict is one of the most destructive dynamics that impacts our daily lives; Dare to believe in yourself. Live well, laugh often, love much. Find your higher power; Are you ready for home ownership? Join us in an informative discussion regarding the benefits of either renting or owning your own home.
Keep your family safe: Educate yourself about the Effects of Witnessing Violence on Children and how professionals and family members can help to reduce the hurt that street violence and domestic violence have on the children.
The Inner You: Does your life need a change? Do you need some practical techniques to deal with the daily stress in your life? Come and learn how to breathe and relax.
Effective Black Parenting: A dynamic and culturally relevant skill-building program for raising proud and confident children. The effective black parenting program teaches parenting skills in a manner that is both culturally sensitive and culturally affirming.
Rafiki: Rafiki is from the Swahili African language which means “friend”, a holistic personal development and mentoring program designed to identify and enhance your potential as women of the future. There are six modules that will render new life experiences for girls, ages 11 to 15.
The Law and You - Working Through the Court System: Come and join a professional from the Legal Aid Society of Rochester who will discuss legal topics that are important to you and your family.
PJ's and Pillows: Enjoy a evening of bedtime stories with your little ones. Be sure to wear your jammies and bring a blanket.
