"Destiny refers to a predetermined course of events. It may be conceived as a predetermined future, whether in general or of an individual. It is a concept based on the belief that there is a fixed natural order to the universe."

In this case Destiny at Wilson Commencement Park is an 18-unit (8 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom) apartment building that will help us expand our services to reach single parent families that are even more seriously challenged. Destiny houses and provides programming for troubled families that are experiencing multiple problems, and have special needs. These families have an intense desire to turn their lives around, but no idea how to go about it. Coming to Destiny will be their first step toward family and financial stability. We believe that change for these families is possible based on the evidence of the positive changes in the lives of the more than 550 families, WCP graduates, residents and their families. They have achieved long-term stability and have benefited from the generosity and support of a community of donors like you.

History

To meet the concentrated needs of single-parent families with multiple problems and special needs, Wilson Commencement Park built a supportive apartment complex. These apartments will offer a structured setting for families to begin their journeys toward a healthier life style. All in all, we added 32,700 square feet of space in response to the growth, since the building opened in 1991, in the number of people who participate in our life-enhancing programs as residents, community members, or volunteers.

Funding

Funding for Destiny at Wilson Commencement Park was provided by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance - Homeless Housing and Assistance Program (HHAP), New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal, the City of Rochester, Federal Home Loan, Tax Credits.

Lisa, a resident at Destiny:

Let me introduce you to Lisa, a resident of Destiny. She is a single mother of three children, and was molested by a family member. Growing up, she saw her mother struggling to make the welfare check last all month. She has no role model for economic self-sufficiency, work ethics, or effective parenting. She dropped out of high school when her first child was born. She has no support system to help her improve her live, and that of her children. The services she receives from community providers are disjointed. The best she can do in obtaining a job without a high school diploma is custodial work. She is grateful for a menial job but she dreams of finding one that will support her family. She can not always pay her bills, and a recent medical problem sent her into an even greater downward spiral, Lisa has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She needs direct guidance and one-on-one care to assure adequate follow through and progress toward greater independence, intensive case management and strong advocacy in a supportive environment to learn to function more effectively, believe in herself, and be able to hold fast to each hard-won step we offer the community-at-large through our Communiversity: Life Skills Academy™ and the nationally recognized programs and services that we provide for the single parent families that live in our gated community.
