A Resident's Story

Carlos and his son moved into the Park on August 16, 2006

"When my son's mother became very ill with liver problems more than three years ago, and she couldn't take care of our son, I became Michael's father and mother. I was working and living with my girl friend until last summer. I needed to make a drastic change and moved out. Michael and I became homeless. We lived in a truck for three days. Social services wouldn't help us because I was working. I was very scared. I went to Catholic Family Services, and they referred me to the Park.

"Wilson Commencement Park opened its doors to me and let me know that people do care. I am very happy here. I have established a network of friends at the park. We help each other. I won a car in the Park's essay contest. I'm so grateful that I can work until 3:30 p.m. and then be here for my son. I know he'll grow up fast."
