A Resident's Story

Sharon

Sharon came on her own as a member of the community to participate in the services and programs of Wilson Commencement Park. Sharon has two daughters, one of whom is disabled and needs constant care.

Although Sharon matriculated at Bryant and Stratton, she had to leave because of the demands of her daughter's care. She now attends Monroe Community College, which has been able to provide her with an individualized schedule where she does much of her work at home.

Sharon has requested an extension to stay at the Park another year and, although her goals are still unclear, she would like to develop a home-based business which would accommodate her child care needs. She has been referred to Career Development Services for guidance. Although she is a hard worker and an excellent parent, her child care issues have prevented her from achieving her goals to date. WCP has initiated discussions with her home health provider to resolve problems related to her needing to be "on call" at all times for her daughter, so that Sharon is not constantly called from work or school to provide care.
