A Resident's Story
Alma
Alma was referred to Wilson Commencement Park by Alternatives for Battered Women. She fled her family home with just the clothes on her back, intent on finding safety for herself and her children.
Initially, there were no units available at the time of her referral, and Alma went to live with a friend in a room above her garage. It took more than a month until an apartment became available for her and her two teenage children at Wilson Commencement Park. Alma says that when she moved into Wilson Commencement Park, she was tired‹tired of living in fear and of being controlled by another person.
Today, Alma is currently working as a hair stylist at J.C.Penney, and she in the process of obtaining a divorce or, as she says, "getting her freedom." She is also looking for permanent housing, perhaps at Briarwood on Scottsville Road, through Housing Opportunities.
