A Resident's Story

Ramon

Ramon has met challenges that at times seemed insurmountable, including, as a "Dad," obtaining custody of his five children. Ramon's last several years have been spent trying to reunite his family and regain his financial security.

After twelve years of marriage, he and his wife divorced. In 1996, Ramon sought custody of his 5 children, and after two years of struggle, he obtained full custody of his children. However, two of these children were recently abducted by their mother. Ramon just last month learned their whereabouts ( New York City) and is working within the legal system to secure their safe return to him.

He had worked for a local company as a truck driver, but unfortunately the company relocated to New Mexico from Rochester, and he became unemployed. In April 1998, he approached Wilson Commencement Park in a search for stable housing for his family.

Ramon has also been working diligently to become financially self-sufficient, to provide for his family. He enrolled in the culinary program at SUNY's Educational Opportunity Center, where he learned business and cooking skills and finished in the top 5 of the class. In June, he successfully auditioned to play percussion for Garth Fagan's "Famous Orpheus" at Geva Theater. His long-term goal is to own his full-service entertainment company, combining his talents in culinary arts and music. Today, Ramon works full time at Foodlink as a transportation specialist.

Ramon believes very strongly in giving back to the community, and he devotes time to Movidá Dance Company, a local African, Caribbean, and Brazilian dance and drumming ensemble. He also volunteers throughout the Rochester community to teach culture through dance and music, as well as with the Professional Chefs/Cooks Association of Rochester, Inc., the Alzheimer's Association (Rochester Chapter), and Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, where he cooked for the Women's Day Food Service.

Ramon says, "Because I am very grateful to have a safe environment in which to raise my children, I make sure that my family gives back by volunteering our time to Wilson Commencement Park. My children participate in Youth Meetings and decorate WCP's Family Room for various activities. I cook for Town Meetings as well."

Ramon's nickname is "Sunshine," because he maintains such a positive outlook and brings cheer to people's lives; his talent and goodwill truly radiate from him.
